Over the last two weeks, we have taken a look at how to use Social media to grow your Nail Business. So far I have focused on how to use Facebook and Google+. In our final post today, we are going to look at two neglected social platforms – Youtube and Pinterest.
How to Use YouTube for Marketing
YouTube is the leading video sharing platform in the world. In fact, more people watch video’s on Youtube every day than there are people actively using Facebook.
If you register a free account with Google (like a Gmail address), you automatically have access to YouTube and can set up your own Channel for your Nail Business. You can even customize your channel with your own branding and corporate colours.
On your YouTube channel, your brand can share and edit its own videos, create playlists, and prompt discussions. Since YouTube was bought over by Google in 2006, YouTube is another platform that the search gives priority to in its search results so take advantage of it!
YouTube for your business is a great way to get your face out there. Videos of you doing Nail Art of a set of Nails on a loyal client are extremely engaging and more shareable than text content. Plus they also aid your search rank in Google.
When creating videos for YouTube quality matters. You don’t need to go out and buy an expensive camera as most modern smart phones have cameras that are good enough to use. Just make sure there’s a purpose and value to what you’re uploading and sharing. Also, make sure to pay attention to your production value. Both the video and audio of what you upload should be crisp, clear, and easy to understand. Please – make sure your hand is steady and your video isn’t shaky!
Tool to Utilize: Teaching Opportunities
YouTube gives you a gateway to be an educator (or an expert!) in your industry. When you create a video, use the opportunity to educate clients about who you are, what you are doing, why you use the products you do etc. You can even create a video series for your customers on how to maintain your nails at home or teach what to do when a nail breaks or chips. Just make sure that you use YouTube to position yourself as the Nail Expert in your trading zone.
How to Use Pinterest for Marketing
Pinterest is a visual platform, so every image you post has to be high-quality and striking to stand out in your feed.
When you start posting images make sure they link back to a related blog or page on your website. (I hope you are starting to realize how important a website is for your Nail Business.) As people click through from your image to your site they want to see or read something that’s related to the image that caught their eye.
Once you begin posting organize your Pinterest by dividing it into boards. Each board should have a category relative to different aspects of your Nail Business. I.e. Gel, Nail Art, Acrylic etc. Make it simple for your followers to find what they’re looking for.
Also, make sure that your image description is keyword optimized. Like any other search engine, Pinterest cannot crawl images. This description is how your pin will show up when people are browsing.

Here is some practical advice if you are starting out with Pinterest…
- Make sure you feature your Nail Business name on your profile. For maximum exposure, uUse your business name as your username, or change your profile name to your business name after your profile is set up.
- Add a paragraph about who you are and what your business does for customers and what you’re interested into the “About” section on your Pinterest profile. It will show up right under your photo, and will be one way that users can find out more about you. Make sure that your photo looks good.
- Connect your account with your Facebook account. Not only will it help you gain followers, but making this connection adds social media icons under your profile picture that link to your Facebook page.
- If you have a website don’t forget to add your website URL in your profile.
- Pin lots of stuff. Pin content consistently and steadily, instead of in massive bursts.
- When you pin an image, add a detailed description under it. Be smart about these descriptions — a good description will stay with an image as it gets repinned all over the Pinterest world. If the image is something from your own site, definitely use your business name in the description.
- Get the Pinterest Mobile app, so you can repin on the go, pin from your Smart Phone and add a location to your pins so others can find your images.

Pinterest added a tool for businesses to better track exactly which pins are working and which aren’t. This way you’re able to collect information on what images people are clicking on. Once you know what your audience is interested in you can make sure to use more images that are along those same lines.

When you are new to the Nail Industry, or you have just opened a new Business, obscurity is your number one enemy – no one knows about you or your products and services. Social Media Marketing is exciting because you can quickly and easily build a customer database, engage fans and prospects and it won’t even cost you any money. Just be aware however that Social media will cost you time. If you start marketing your Nail Business through a Social media platform, make sure that you start committed and keep working it – after all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.
